CHARACTER NAME: marcoh.
CANON: fear&hunger: termina.
CANON POINT: day 2, before the mold apartments..
AGE: 31 years old.
BACKGROUND
HISTORY: wiki.
PERSONALITY:What impression does your character give when meeting someone for the first time? How does the first impression differ from your character’s true nature?
when a person first meets marcoh, he comes off as an intimidating person. he has the look of someone who would sooner bash a person's skull in than listen to reason. it doesn't help matters that he isn't particularly articulate with his words. but he's aware of this weakness; so he chooses to remain silent instead of saying something that might come off wrong. however, that causes different misunderstandings to come up -- like he's unfriendly and honestly contemplating participating in the festival.
however, it doesn't take much or long for marcoh to warm up to people. in truth, he's a very kind-hearted soul. he worries a lot about olivia and tanaka. with the looming threat of the termina festival, he chooses to stay close to the participants that seem like they have the least amount of experience in combat. he even goes into the city to find a wheelchair for olivia -- completely unprompted by her.
and when everyone moves locations, he chooses to stay at the door to face whatever threat would come through first. when he's asked about it, he'll say that it's just habit rather than act like it's any noble action on his part. he honestly has no problems giving everything he has for complete strangers. when tanaka says he wants to learn how to fight, marcoh spends an entire day teaching him some boxing moves. marcoh can't even be recruited at this time; he takes the request seriously and stays with tanaka until he feels the man has a good grasp on how to defend himself.
also, marcoh is far more positive than one would think. he tends to try to think on the brighter side of things and try to offer that optimism to others. even being part of the festival, he doesn't immediately judge the others as homicidal murderers. he considers everyone by how they act versus making snap decisions. when he enters the city, he tries to convince the maddened people that he means them no harm; he even comments about how he doesn't feel good about hurting anyone and hoping they can find a way to help them.
the gap moe is huge on this man. he also has an affinity for frogs and mice. he calls both cute and even ribbits when he sees a frog.
still despite all this, he carries with him a lot of guilt. he had to kill an unknown amount of people for the family. it doesn't sit right with him and he doesn't even know how to begin to talk to anyone about it. during the course of the festival, if he's not brought along, he will slowly go insane. How does your character handle stress? What do they do in an emergency?
for the most part, marcoh handles stress by not focusing on it. instead of focusing on his own feelings, he instead worries about other people.
much like he doesn't take the time to really analyze his mental state on having to commit so many murders because he had been fixated on looking after his sister. marcoh puts all of his negative feelings away and just tries to look out for everyone else around him instead.
unless a person plays as marcoh, no one gets his story. that's the same for everyone else, but marcoh a little more so. he never confines in anyone what is going on with him. he never tells anyone about his sister or his connection to the mafia. he gives no indication that he's on the run -- save to caligura who is another ex-mafia member. however, in caligura's case, he thinks marcoh is there to kill him because that's his reputation. but marcoh is able to convince him that he's just trying to get away and not there to hunt him down. the two of them promise not to out the other, if possible. Thankfully, caligura doesn't want to fight with marcoh if he can avoid it, and marcoh is more willing to trust in a person's word than want to permanently silence them, though. so even in situations of dealing with violent, sane people; he would like to find a peaceful solution. he'd like for a fight to be the very last option.
so, he shares anecdotes to cheer people up, yes, but nothing overtly deep so that they can know too much about his past.
the only hint that anyone might get is asking why he's always guarding the door. he'll call it a habit and say it's because he worked as a bouncer in the past. however, he'll warn anyone who wants to pick up a similar profession to be wary of who their employer is. even tanaka and olivia who arguably spend the most time with marcoh during the festival, they don't know anything about him.
like when his madness and guilt eat at him and he changes into his moonscorched self; tanaka will say that he had no idea that marcoh was struggling with anything. he says that he had no idea that marcoh had any sort of guilt eating away at him. and that is just how he is -- he tries to be a pillar of stability and safety for people around him. he lets himself be worn down by what's around him, but won't let that stop him from looking after those in his opinion need looking after.
as for emergencies, he puts himself in front of others. it's honestly very destructively self-sacrificing, but the way that he acts makes it hard for people to catch it. for example, he's the most capable in a one-on-one fight. it makes sense for him to be in the fray first. it's natural, isn't it, for him to be there so those less capable don't end up getting hurt. without saying anything, marcoh makes himself seem like the most obvious choice and person to be in dangerous situations. he knows how he looks - he knows how he comes off - he uses it to his advantage to keep others from taking risks. What are some of your character's regrets? How is your character impacted by them?
in a lot of ways, marcoh regrets not trusting his gut when it came to riccardo. he feels like if he had kept his distance that he might have spared his sister and himself from being pulled into that criminal world. he might not have had to experience what it's like to commit murder. but it was no secret that his sister was his weakness. she probably would always have ended up exploited to get to him.
however, he would never blame his sister for the life he fell into; he had a choice and chose. he wishes that he did more to teach her how to take care of herself instead of be her shield. if he taught her something, maybe she wouldn't be used as she was. he let himself get compliant because most people were afraid of him and knew better than to do anything to her. he never thought of what would happen if he met people that didn't care if they hurt her make him listen to their demands.
marcoh hates the fact that he was too weak to do anything against the family. he was too afraid of what the retaliation would be if he hurt riccardo. but he shouldn't have been. he should have just carried it out and run with his sister instead of letting himself be used. he had killed an unknown amount of people and made into a hunting dog for the family. most people who knew of him were terrified of him. whatever relationships or connections that he hoped to have with people were ruined. now he was just an enforcer of the family -- not even a hired murderer since he was only ever threatened with the safety of his sister instead of paying for his services. which leads to its own rumors of the kind of person he was.
and he wonders if he's a good person. he honestly wonders if despite all the good he tries to do for strangers if he's actually good. but isn't he just a murderer hiding in plain sight? isn't he just some thug that is trying to redeem himself without telling anyone anything? if he told them the truth, would they still accept him or would they renounce him as a person? he doesn't know -- he tries to trust people but can't trust them with who he thinks he is.
he also wishes that he was a little more learned. growing up on the streets, he put all his efforts into taking care of his sister. he made sure she was well-cared for and protected. he's aware he isn't as smart as the other participants. his education is low and it bothers him in some situations. like he occasionally gets known idioms wrong and gets embarrassed after. so, he can talk big but worries that with his level of intelligence that he will be led astray by those much more clever than he is. one of the intimidation options in fighting marcoh is pointing out his lack of intelligence, it'll cause him to hesitate and miss more. it is a very sore subject for him, and he wished that he had gotten enough money or taken the time to educate himself.
INVENTORY:
- 1 blue vial (just water now)
- 1 white vial (just water)
- 1 cloth fragment
- 3 matches
- 1 wine vial (at least he has some booze)
POWERS
SKILLS/ABILITIES:
NON-MAGICAL
lockpicking. it's just as it says; he can pick most simple locks. when he was younger, as a means of income and food source for his sister and himself, he broke into houses.
boxer. he can punch the arms off someone! but more realistically, he probably is just not holding back and breaking bones when he actually gets into a fight. he's gotten pretty good at knowing how to hit someone where it hurts, but he doesn't want to if he can avoid it.
MAGICAL
mastery over vermin. listen! if i can have him have one skill, it is the ability to talk to vermin (e.g. frogs, rats, crows, etc). it's also a magical attack that causes a swarm of animals to attack a person before peacing out immediately after. given that there are no animals presently in the city, this means nothing to him mechanically but means everything to him narratively. he just misses talking to frogs, man, even if the frogs insulted him.
WEAKNESSES: he's just a dude.
